Heatwave in Europe? We found the most local way to cool off: lake swimming! Inland Europe really does have a lake around every corner. We visited three of the best — Königssee in Germany, Interlaken in Switzerland and Strandbad Wesenauer in Austria — and packed all the practical details into this page. Why do Europeans love lake swimming?

Inland Europe can get properly hot in summer — and a lot of places don't even have air conditioning. Even where they do, locals head for the lake instead. Why? Alpine lakes are fed by glacier and snowmelt, so they stay refreshingly cold even in summer: Lake Brienz at Interlaken averages just 17–21°C in summer, and at Königssee the water doesn't reach 20°C even close to shore. That first plunge is a shock in the best way — perfect for a heatwave. And it's cheap: Strandbad Wesenauer costs just €6, which is why lake swimming is the ultimate local summer hack.

Germany's Königssee: the emerald lake in the Alps

Königssee sits in the Berchtesgaden Alps in south-east Germany, just south of Berchtesgaden and very close to Salzburg, Austria — which is why we say you can base yourself in Salzburg. The lake runs about 7.7 km long and plunges to 190 m, making it Germany's third deepest lake. The water is famously clear — often touted as Germany's cleanest lake. To protect it, only electric, rowing and pedal boats have been allowed since 1909; private motorboats are a no-go, so the lake is eerily quiet. Swimming is allowed, but the shores are rocky and hard to reach — most people get in at Seelände (just not in the boat-lock area). The water stays below 20°C even in summer, so it's mostly the hardy locals you'll see swimming! For sightseeing, electric passenger boats stop at St. Bartholomä and Salet (mid-April to mid-October).

Switzerland's Interlaken: the town between two lakes

Interlaken sits in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, right between two big lakes: Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Lake Brienz is the showstopper — the official Interlaken tourism site calls it "the turquoise gem". The glacier-fed water glows in unreal blue-green shades, stretching 14 km long and up to 260 m deep across 29.8 km². Summer water averages a brisk-but-swimmable 17–21°C. Around the lake you'll find little swimming bays and lidos, like the Burgseeli lido in Ringgenberg, tucked inside a nature reserve with surprisingly warm water. Done swimming? There are some 400 km of signposted trails around the lake to explore.

Austria's Strandbad Wesenauer: €6 well spent

Strandbad Wesenauer is a lakeside lido and sports complex in Fuschl am See, Austria, right on the shore of the Fuschlsee. Entry was €6 per person when we went — a steal by European standards! Besides swimming and sunbathing, there's beach volleyball, paddleboarding and kayaking, plus food stalls and cafes if you get hungry. All of it with the Austrian Alps as a backdrop — honestly one of the best views we've ever cooled off in. It's easy to reach by bus too: the stop is literally called "Wesenauer".

Our lake-swimming tips

👙 Swimsuit is non-negotiable: if you spot a lake you like, you'll want to be in it within minutes.
🧣 Big towel: dry off and change in seconds — no soggy bus rides.
🩴 Water shoes (optional but smart): lakebeds are rough and stony; your feet will thank you.
🌡️ Alpine lakes are COLD: even in summer, Lake Brienz sits at 17–21°C and Königssee stays under 20°C. Ease in gradually and let your body adjust.
⚓ Respect the rules: at Königssee only electric and rowing boats are allowed (no private motorboats), and swimming is limited to designated spots — skip the boat-lock area.
💶 Carry some cash: lidos like Strandbad Wesenauer charge entry (€6), so small bills come in handy.
🧴 Sunscreen + water: lakeside spots have zero shade — reapply sunscreen and stay hydrated!
