Granada is southern Spain's tapas capital, and almost every bar here plays by a hidden rule: order a drink and a free tapa lands on your table! Each bar runs its own game — some even upgrade the food with every round ✨ Locals just order a drink, nibble their tapa and chat the evening away. Us? We decided to take on the challenge of eating free tapas until we were completely full... and we failed 😅 (The portions are no joke!)

📍 Bar Los Diamantes — Calle Navas 28, 18009 Granada, Spain. Calle Navas is Granada's most famous tapas street — bars shoulder to shoulder along the whole block — and Los Diamantes is the street's crown jewel: founded in 1942, its very first branch opened right here, specialising in fried fish (pescado frito)! Go early for an easy spot — the street starts queuing around 8 pm.

The free-tapa tradition: a perk most of Spain doesn't have

In most of Spain, tapas are small plates you order and pay for. Granada is one of the few places left where a tapa still arrives FREE with every drink — no surcharge, no asterisk — and one travel outlet even calls it "the last free tapa left in Spain." The tradition is deeply rooted here: knocking off work, ordering a drink, eating the tapa and chatting the night away is simply the Granada way of life.

How the free tapa works (and how to play it well)

The rule is beautifully simple: order any drink — usually a caña (small draft beer), a glass of wine, or even a soft drink — and a free tapa arrives with it. If you can only pick ONE street for tapas in Granada, locals will point you to Calle Navas — the city's most famous tapas street, a whole strip of bars shoulder to shoulder, buzzing every night. Yes, it draws the tourists, but it works: just walk into whichever bar is packed with locals and you can't go wrong. When you've done a lap, nearby Calle Elvira and the Realejo neighbourhood are excellent for round two — great atmosphere and plenty of variety.

The bar we hit — Bar Los Diamantes (Calle Navas 28, 18009 Granada) — is a Granada institution on Calle Navas: founded in 1942, its very first branch opened on this very street, and it's built its name on fried fish (pescado frito) — fresh seafood, fried to order. Ask a local to name one tapas bar and it's almost always Los Diamantes. Prices? Around €2.50–3.50 for a caña with your free tapa thrown in — an absolute steal. Only catch: it gets packed at night, so arrive early if you want a comfy spot.

Tinto de Verano: what Spaniards actually drink in summer

Tourists think summer in Spain means sangria; locals actually drink Tinto de Verano — literally "red wine of summer." The recipe is dead simple: one part red wine, one part lemon soda, poured over ice, often finished with a slice of lemon or orange. Unlike sangria, there's no fruit, no cinnamon, no fuss — which is exactly why it's cheap, fast and everywhere across southern Spain, from dive bars to corner shops. Legend has it the drink was born in a tavern in Córdoba in the early 20th century, first called "un Vargas." You can even grab it ready-bottled at the supermarket — perfect hotel-room sundowners!
